Mainil donne immédiatement le ton avec en ouverture «Long Distance», une composition d’Erwin Vann. Les scratches de DJ Landzar et le violon de Cécile Broché forment un ensemble aigu mais malgré tout harmonieux.

Le premier temps fort est une composition de Chris Joris, « Hedge Cut » : les rythmes africains de Chris Joris aux percussions s’invitent à ceux d’Antoine Cirri à la batterie sur un Mainil très Coltrainien.

La composition éponyme de Mainil « Between the Two Solstices » donne beaucoup de place à DJ Landzar qui, avec ses platines et scratches, en plus des percussions et violon, crée une atmosphère à la Pink Floyd. Alain Rochette au piano et José Bedeur à la basse complètent ces passionnants échanges riches en couleurs.

Avec sa compo personnelle « Ajax » et « Special Terms », co-signée par Alain Rochette, Mainil laisse flotter la sonorité chaude du saxophone sur un irrésistible afro-beat swing. Et cela prédomine sur tout l’album.

Avec des distorsions audacieuses qui sont parfois hors tonalité et des tensions qui s’ajoutent, écoutez la composition « Italian Party » de Cécile Broché pour entendre combien le violon peut sonner jazzy. Bernard Lefèvre – Jazz Mozaiek (traduit du néerlandais)
